Fingertip Pulse Oximeter
The pulse oximeter is a reusable device and intended for spot-checking of oxygen saturation and pulse rate for use with the finger of adult patients in healthcare environments. And it is not intended to be used under motion or low perfusion scenarios.
What is a pulse oximeter?
A pulse oximeter is a small device that clips onto your finger and reads your heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Although these have usually only been used in medical clinics, there is reason to believe now that they are a useful device to have at home during the COVID-19 pandemic to detect asymptomatic cases.
Identifying COVID-19 Cases, Particularly Asymptomatic Cases
The COVID-19 virus attacks lung cells, causing air sacs in the lungs to collapse and your oxygen levels to fall. Common symptoms include:
- fever;
- shortness of breath;
- tiredness; and
- other flu-like symptoms
Of concern, has been the number of asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, where they have not presented with any of the above symptoms, but have had dangerously low oxygen levels.
Pulse oximetry can be valuable in identifying these asymptomatic cases, and preventing them from going unnoticed and exposing others, by monitoring any declines in their blood oxygen levels which might indicate damage to the lungs, even if they aren’t experiencing other symptoms.
With lockdown restrictions likely to be eased shortly and businesses reopening, identifying asymptomatic cases will be important in helping prevent future outbreaks.
